Why schools are targeted

Education is the most attacked sector internationally, ahead of government by a wide margin, and the reasons are structural rather than bad luck. A school holds detailed personal information about children and families, operates a network that by design must accommodate hundreds of unmanaged personal devices, and typically has one or two people covering all of IT alongside other duties.

There is also a threat schools face that businesses do not: a proportion of incidents originate with students. Curious, capable teenagers with a lot of time and legitimate network access are a genuinely different problem from an external attacker, and they are not deterred by a perimeter firewall.

Security controls designed for a corporate network tend to fail in a school, because a school cannot lock down its network the way a business can. Frequently asked

We already have filtering and a firewall. Is that not enough?

Those control what reaches the network from outside. They do nothing about a compromised staff account being used to sign in legitimately from anywhere, which is how many current incidents actually work.

Can this cover student-caused incidents?

Yes, and that is a genuine part of the value in a school setting. Monitoring is looking for unusual activity and privilege escalation regardless of who is behind it, and internal activity is often easier to spot than external.

Are we too small as a single-site primary?

No. Small schools hold the same sensitive information as large ones and generally have less IT support, so the case is often stronger rather than weaker.
